The Honest Company and their founder Jessica Alba have been taking a lot of heat lately. It all started when a social media photo of a very sunburned back hit the internet. The woman who posted the sunburn picture claimed that she used sunblock from The Honest Company and that it failed. Now Jessica Alba and her company are coming under intense scrutiny and if we’re being honest (pun intended) it’s really not Jessica’s fault.
The Honest Company boasts eco-friendly and natural products. Their sunscreen is no different but it has been getting a lot of complaints from unhappy customers. Now that one photo of an unhappy and sunburnt Honest Company customer has hit the internet, there are pictures coming out in droves of people and their children suffering from some really awful burns.
There have been some explanations offered up as to why the sunscreen from The Honest Company is failing and upsetting so many people. The sunscreen is mineral based and all natural and because of that, it has to be applied very thick. The zinc oxide in the formula plays a large part in preventing sunburn so those wearing it would have a white sheen to their skin from the sunscreen.
In 2014, sunblock from The Honest Company was reformulated after customers complained about issues that made it more effective. Customers said it left a white sheen on their skin. They also said the sunscreen was greasy and uncomfortable. Those are issues that come with the effectiveness of the product. Once it was reformulated to be more comfortable and more aesthetically pleasing, it also lost effectiveness.
